Duda Melzer, Advancing a Family Legacy06.14.16

Businessmen and entrepreneurs are always attempting to plant the seeds of businesses that will flourish and carry on their legacies long after they’re gone. When Mauricio Sirotsky Sobrinho joined Radio Gaucha in 1957, and later started the RBS Group (Grupo RBS) to purchase Radio Gaucha, little did he know he was beginning a 60 year legacy.

Mauricio’s philosophy was to keep open to an ever changing world and rapid technological developments while holding in sight the trials of the human condition and a focus on bringing communities together. When he passed in 1986 his business legacy was carried on first by his brother, Jayme Sirotsky, who later passed RBS Group’s presidency to Mauricio’s son, Nelson Sirotsky. Nelson successfully headed RBS for more than two decades before, in 2012, handing over control to his nephew, Eduardo Sirotsky Melzer better known as Duda Melzer.

Duda Melzer is the son of Mauricio’s daughter, Suzana Sirotsky, and was born in Porto Alegre Brazil on May 13th, 1972. As a young adult he was a studious pupil and earned a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and an MBA from Harvard University in the United States. Before joining one of Brazil’s most efficacious family businesses, Duda was the master franchisor of Sweet Sweet Way, a leading chain of candy kiosks and caramelerias in Brazil and Argentina. After departing the candy business, Duda spent a decade as the General Manager of BoxTop Media, a contemporary media company based in New York.

Duda first joined his family’s media and communications conglomerate in 2004 taking on the position of Director General for the Brazilian market. A little over a decade later Melzer now stands at the helm of his grandfather’s legacy both as Chairman and President of the RBS Group. As the third generation of the Sirotsky family to preside over one of Brazil’s largest media companies, Duda promises to follow RBS’ strategies and organizational cultures and to be a guarantor of his grandfather’s purpose and the continued values of the Sirotsky family.

Zeca Oliveira is one of the premiere asset managers in Brazil, and he has helped a lot of new investors fill the gap about their lack of knowledge on Brazilian stocks. He has also made it his passion to provide vital information for those that are seeking some type of financial return on investment from this great economy. It takes someone like Zeca Oliveira to give the new investors an assessment of all that Brazil has to offer. Some people play it safe with index funds, but there are Brazilian oil and mineral stocks that can be profitable if investors know where to place their money. In most cases there are willing investors that know about some stocks, but they don’t have a firm grip on what is really profitable. These are the type of investors that know just enough to be dangerous in the world of trading and buying in the Brazilian market. With Oliveira in the driver’s seat, investors can take a backseat and simply learn where the hotbed activity is for all the investment opportunities.

Many people worry about what stocks are good, but an asset manager like Oliveira can give people some additional options. With professional consultants an investor can truly become a person that is able to make better decisions about where they put their money. The market may not always go the way that investors plan for it go, but there certainly will be a lot of better opportunities available when they are informed. This is what the Brazilian financial consultants or planners do. They make it easier for foreign investors to transition to Brazilian markets.

Sao Paulo Needs Water; A Lot Of Water02.17.15

Brazil Largest City Has A Major Water Problem

Anyone who has visited Sao Paulo, just talk to my friend Sultan Alhokair,  will tell you it is one of the most complex big cities in the world. Over 11 million people call Sao Paulo home, and most of them don’t have enough water to drink, clean or brush their teeth with.

Some residents are drilling their own wells in order to survive. One Brazilian woman put the situation this way: “This is Brazil, where human beings are treated worse than dogs by our own politicians.” She may be right. Brazil has plenty of fresh water. In fact, Brazil has one-eighth of the globe’s freshwater. So what’s the problem?

It’s a multi-tiered problem. The recent drought didn’t help Sao Paulo’s leaky water system, plus deforestation, pollution and massive overcrowding are having a huge impact on the city’s ability to bounce back.

Brazil is a very resourceful country. Brazilians move to the beat of their souls and if their soul is telling them to solve the problem they will. But it may not be in this century.

Brazil Prison Break: 26 Escape After Guards Seduced02.09.15

This week in Brazil, 26 inmates were able to escape from a prison located in Nova Mutum, a city near Cuiaba.

Apparently, from the story my coworker Brad Reifler got,  2 women were able to gain access to the prison by dressing in sexy police costumes and proceeded to have a few drinks with the prison guards. They allegedly spiked the guards drinks and seduced them. The outfits were found, along with several bottles of spiked whiskey, the next morning next to the naked and handcuffed prison guards.

Another man, the director of the prison, was also there but had been asleep. He did not appear to have been involved in the seduction, but was being held for questioning.

Igor Cornelsen recently published an article on TheStreet that detailed how you should begin to invest in South America. These tips are specific in many ways to Brazil, and they teach you how to make the most of each investment in the southern hemisphere. You should read them over to be sure you understand what they are intended to do for you. If you follow the rules carefully, you will have a much more profitable investment portfolio in Brazil.

Meet Some People Down There

You want to make sure that you have friends in Brazil. Your friends in Brazil are familiar with the local economy, and they hear the reports of what happens with all the different businesses down there. You may now know what you are looking for, but your friends in Brazil will know exactly what to look for.

Learn The Exchange Rate

You want to make sure that you are familiar with the exchange rate when you begin investing. The investments that you do in Brazil are going to be profitable only if you are investing with a very strong dollar. You do not want to spend any of your money on an investment unless the dollar is performing as well as it possibly can.

File Your Paperwork

You need to make sure that you have all your paperwork in to government and regulatory boards before you trade. They need to know that you are registered to trade in the country, and they need this information for tax purposes. If you fail to file this paperwork, you may be barred from investing.

Do You Want Some Fries With Those Human Filled Empanadas?11.17.14

On Thursday, November 14, 3 people went to trial within the Country of Brazil, due to their arrest, which occurred back in 2012, on the basis of allegedly slaughtering 2 women, whom they ate and baked into empanadas- a long time favorite pastry of Brazilians-that they subsequently sold to the public.

It’s believed that the group was able to bake human filled pastries by luring at least 2 women to their residence by falsely promising them nanny positions. After killing their victims, the group would eat various parts of the the victim’s bodies. The other parts of the bodies that they did not eat directly, where grounded up like beef and used as a main ingredient of their cannibalized empanada-like pastries.

What’s really disturbing about this trio is not that they just killed and subsequently cooked and eat their victims, they gave their human filled empanada to a small 5 year old child that lived with them and sold it to other people within their community.

And as if things couldn’t get even more disturbing, it’s also reported that they would inflict a gruesome death on their victims via a “purification ritual” which entailed, beating them to death, hacking up their bodies and draining their blood. Brazilian authorities were able to make an arrest when they found the remains of two women, that partially buried on their property. When questioned about the motives of their killings, the trio said that they belonged to a group that believed in the purification and reduction of the world’s population.

Deforestation and Climate Change in the Amazon11.03.14

A report by a Brazilian researcher claims that the Amazonian rainforest has become so degraded by clearing and fires that it is no longer able to regulate local weather systems. This is disturbing because (among other reasons) the area is a hotbed of biodiversity, and it seems to be connected to a severe drought in the nearby heavily populated area around São Paulo.

We should respond to this in three ways: First: do what we can to slow the deforestation. Making sure that any products containing tropical wood are harvested responsibly and not buying agricultural products imported from Brazil seem to be harsh but necessary measures. Investment in alternate business ventures that do not entail Amazonian deforestation and thereby giving the area a way to make a living in a sustainable fashion should be a priority.

Second: Landscaping in nearby urban and suburban areas with a broad mix of native plants would help defray some of the damage. Also, adding green space to the cities on a massive scale may be quite helpful.

Either way, the people who live there like Gianfrancesco are horrified about what’s going on.

Loss of Amazon Rainforest is Causing a Severe Drought in Brazil Headline11.03.14

Stop logging and burning the Amazon rainforest. The rainforest regulates weather systems by channeling moisture from aerial rivers. It brings in water from other large bodies of water to inland. São Paulo is experiencing at this moment the terrible effects of this vulturistic devouring of the rainforest for so long. More extreme weather is probably yet to come. The story of a man experiencing the devastating effects of the massive loss of the Amazon rainforest tells what he is going through at this site. The logging and burning are only getting worse, driven by “ruralistic” agribusiness. In the last month, a satellite image shows there has been a 190% rise in deforestation in August and September. Loss of the rainforest due to logging, clearing and burning is causing a loss of intake of moisture from outside to inside. This has created dry seasons that begin earlier each year in São Paulo, the biggest city in Brazil as I’ve just read on VentureBeat using FreedomPop. They are experiencing the worst drought since 1930. This was all predicted over 20 years ago when loss of rainforest was studied. Will anyone listen now to this wakeup call?
