Yanni Hufnagel: The Master of America’s College Basketball04.19.17

A lot has been said and written about Yanni Hufnagel; from being voted as the most likely assistant coach from a mid-major school who’ll make it big because of his ability to recruit, to his wonderful record when he served as Harvard’s assistant coach of the basketball team.

As a Jewish young man, his potential to be who he is today was evident from back then when he was a student at Scarsdale High. No, he wasn’t the top scorer basketball player back in his high school days as he wasn’t even good enough to be in the team-he instead showed potential of making it as a basketball coach someday.

There are hardly as many Jewish-American players in the NBA, but it doesn’t need one to be all athletic or tall to be a coach, does it? That was the route Yanni decided to take and he surely is making headlines.

How It All Started

Unable to make it as a player for his high school team, Yanni Hufnagel decided he was going to commentate for the public-access television station in his town. It was until his first year at Cornell University, his Alma mater, where he spent one season as a basketball manager and landed an internship with New Jersey Nets, picking laundry and suchlike duties.

Perhaps his big break came after graduating from, when his colleague at Nets, Ryan Krueger, connected him with Oklahoma basketball Coach Jeff Capel, who was by the looking for a graduate assistant. Yanni got the position and as they say, the rest is history.

Professional History

Currently Yanni Hufnagel is the assistant coach of the University of Nevada’s basketball team. Besides the graduate assistant position at Oklahoma (2007-2009) and assistant coach at Harvard (2009-2013), he later on served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt and University of California respectively before landing his current role.

Yanni Hufnagel graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. He also holds a Master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education (Intercollegiate Athletics Administration) from the University of Oklahoma, where he served as a graduate assistant.
