Posted in advisor, infrastructure expert on May 02, 2017

The Brazilian government, in conjunction with the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (NBESD), is seeking to improve the sanitation standards in the country. Infrastructure experts, such as Felipe Montoro, have been debating about the new developments and how it will impact the Brazilian people. In an interview between Montoro and Edison Carlos from Trata Brasil, the whole issue was put on the table and dissected further.

The Initiative’s Impact

In the interview, Edison told Jens that the initiative was good in the sense that it would help reduce the waste levels in the nation. Secondly, he noted that sanitation services would significantly be improved regarding increased resources and professional management. He argued that since state organizations provide the bigger percentage of sanitation services, the entry of private organizations will only be complementary. Combining experience from state organizations and resources from private organizations will improve efficiency.

Financial Wastage

Felipe Montoro reported that sanitation plans by NBESD would be advised by surveys to obtain a clear picture of the sanitation needs in different regions. This means that every region will have solutions specifically customized for its problems. On his side, Edison decried the levels of financial wastage by state-owned water companies, which he said was precipitating the poor delivery of services. He expressed optimism in that the private organization will be able to reduce this wastage due to the type of management and resources they have.
